Volunteers are needed to join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) at the Grey Cloud Dunes SNA on Thursday, June 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to help remove sumac, a shrubby tree that would otherwise overtake this vital habitat.
Home to a rare dry prairie, this area provides essential native bee, butterfly and wildlife habitat, Grey Cloud Dunes SNA is one of those places you can hardly believe is in a metro area. The first rises 40 to 60 feet above river-level with remarkable crescents and blowouts sculpted by southwesterly winds. The second, 110 feet above the Mississippi, has a dramatic cut-face. Dunes on both terraces rise in waves, cresting 10 to 20 feet above the swales.
To ensure a high quality experience, capacity is limited and preregistration required. For more information, including how to register, please visit visit: http://fmr.org/events/2016/06/30/lop-and-remove-sumac-grey-cloud-dunes-sna
