Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund are national organizations dedicated to promoting clean, safe, and affordable water, as well as protecting the environment, health, and economic well-being. Clean Water Action focuses on preventing pollution, creating environmentally safe jobs, and empowering individuals to participate in democracy. Clean Water Fund organizes grassroots coalitions and campaigns to safeguard various aspects of life, including the environment, health, and economic prosperity.

Clean Water is currently seeking a driven Zero Waste Organizer to join its ReThink Disposable program, which addresses the global waste crisis by collaborating with food operators to implement cost-saving changes in food operations. The candidate will engage with businesses ranging from small family-owned establishments to large institutions, aiming to reduce the nearly 1 trillion pieces of disposable food ware and packaging used annually in the US. With a focus on eradicating single-use disposables and advocating for policy changes, the organizer will work to prevent further pollution of waterways and mitigate the disproportionate impact of waste on low-income communities of color. This role entails extensive in-person outreach, requiring strong persuasion skills and the ability to build relationships quickly, particularly with businesses, schools, and local governments throughout Minnesota, where the program will be implemented.

A percentage of this position will also assist with Greater Minnesota organizing, town hall planning, and relationship building. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet all grant deliverables including, but not limited to: 
  • Conducting field outreach and recruit businesses, with a focus on engaging businesses owned and managed by black, indigenous, people of color, women, and/or non-English mono-lingual individuals to participate in ReThink Disposable program.
  • Supporting ReThink Program Director in contract administration and data collection and business impact analysis (training will be provided);
  • Meeting targets for recruiting business participants to switch to reusable foodware on time and with significant results.
  • Participating in meetings to plan, coordinate, and implement ReThink Disposable program.
  • Foster existing and new partnerships with zero-waste and community-based organizations to further the mission of the program in a collaborative fashion by requesting, hosting, and facilitating meetings with allies.
  •  Working directly with local and state elected officials. 
  • Facilitating Great Lakes Cluster meetings and other Great Minnesota outreach activities. 
  • Working Hybrid in a team environment and communicating with your supervisor and staff timely.
  • Perform other duties as directed by Supervisors.
Qualifications
  • Able to communicate effectively with businesses and the public (canvass experience a plus);
  • Writing skills needed in order to share stories of program impact;
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently, meet deadlines and complete assignments on time while juggling multiple projects and tasks;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel around Minnesota;
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and transport materials will be required;
  •  Basic knowledge of water, waste, climate change, marine debris and plastics pollution;
  • Passion for racial equity and environmental justice.
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is a plus;
  • Experience in the food service industry is a plus;
  • Having your own personal vehicle is a plus (travel reimbursements will be provided).
  • Applicants must reside in the Minneapolis, MN area.
  • Ability to travel to the office in a hybrid schedule for in-person meetings, collaboration, and onsite work.
  • Candidates must have reliable and high-speed internet connectivity at their home.
