Free public lecture on nitrogen pollution

October 4, 2012 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Freshwater Society and the University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences will present a free public lecture on the problem of excess nitrogen in our environment and the difficult choices involved in doing something about it. Otto Doering, director of Purdue University’s Climate Change Research Center, will deliver the lecture titled “Excess Nitrogen: A Confounding Problem for Energy Use, Food Production, the Water we Drink, the Air we Breathe.” Each year, the U.S. releases five times more nitrogen into the environment than is deposited or released naturally. That nitrogen pollutes ground and surface waters, contributes to smog and increases green house gases. In 2011, Doering led a team of scientists that prepared a report on the problem for the EPA’s Science Advisory Board. More information
