Policy Forum Series: Natural Gas and Minnesota’s Energy Future

September 21, 2012 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

$30 – $60

In recent years domestic production of natural gas has increased dramatically, dropping prices to record lows in comparison to other fuel sources. In the coming months, important decisions will be made about how best to invest in the future of our energy system, including coal and renewable power generation, as well as transportation technology. These decisions will result in infrastructure that will last for decades. At such a critical moment, can we find a common vision for what a sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy system will look like for Minnesota? At this policy forum, state and national experts will address the following questions:

– What do we know about the price of natural gas over the short and long term? What are some of the potential price scenarios and what are the potential consequences of our uncertainty?
– How might different natural gas price scenarios impact the use of coal for electricity generation or the development of renewable energy sources in Minnesota? What policies at the state and national level may further impact our use of different energy sources?
– What does a sustainable energy system really mean for our state, and how will natural gas fit into the picture?
