Forty-three is a new record—there were 33 farms listed in our directory last year. It appears the demand far exceeded supply in 2008, so it’s good to see more CSA farms stepping up to the plate in 2009. CSA farming is celebrating 20 years in the Twin Cities area (we started with two farms in 1989) and it appears that despite the slow economy, it’s experiencing an incredible growth spurt.
I’ve spent the past few weeks fielding questions from journalists about why, with all the bad economic news, consumers appear willing to pony up money before the growing season and invest in a farm. All I have are guesses: a desire to return to basics during turbulent times; concerns that you can’t even eat a peanut butter sandwich without putting your health at risk; a feeling that with prices for everything else skyrocketing, staying home and cooking sustainably-raised whole foods makes good fiscal sense. Or maybe the movement is just hitting on all cylinders at a time when “local foods” is all the rage.
Whatever the reasons, it will be interesting to see if this growth is sustainable in the long term. No doubt the passion and demand are there, but it takes more than saying “this is a cool idea whose time has come” to make a creative partnership between farmers and consumers work long after the last fall carrots are gone.
Looking back at LSP’s own historical statistics for CSA farms in the Twin Cities region, I’ve noticed an interesting trend: we had years where the number of farms skyrocketed, and years where we lost farms—a few steps forward, a few steps back. But the overall trend line has been steady during the past decade or so; year-in and year-out, around two dozen CSA operations have been around to service the region.
Now that we are approaching the four-dozen level, it will be interesting to see if this is the new high water mark, a temporary stop on the way up, or a short-term spike that will eventually settle back down to two-dozen.
One thing the Twin Cities CSA community has in its favor is that we have a built up a nice solid base of veteran CSA farmers over the years. Some have been around a dozen years or more and they are now serving as mentors to other wannabe CSA farmers, either formally through LSP’s Farm Beginnings course and internships, or informally via field days, on-farm visits and telephone calls. On the other side of the CSA equation, we also have a solid base of consumers who have been members of CSA farms for a decade or more. They, in turn, have served as “mentors” of a sort for other consumers who want to dip a toe (or should I say tongue?) into this revolutionary way of eating. To the uninitiated, the CSA experience can be intimidating.
Industrial ag has done its best to make food production a dangerous, even toxic, entity that works best the less consumers know about it. That’s why some eaters view visiting even a sustainable vegetable operation as a foreign, scary, experience. Farm fresh kale does not come with storage and cooking instructions written on the leaves. Interacting with someone who has taken the CSA leap and lived to tell about it can help immensely—and it’s fun.
Studies show that whenever you want an innovative practice to catch on—whether it be raising vegetables without chemicals, buying a share in a farm, or utilizing a new method for teaching math, for that matter—the chances of that practice taking hold for the long haul and becoming a part of mainstream society are greatly increased when the people experimenting with it interact with mentors in a community-like setting.
