The Sand Coulee offers magnificent beauty with its tall grass and wildflowers. Volunteers will learn to identify and remove cow vetch and spotted knapweed and then, together with FMR staff, remove a patch of these invasives. In just a couple of hours, volunteers will have enhanced the prairie's ecological integrity by helping protect the prairie's threatened native plant species and improve wildlife habitat. Seed Collection in the Sand Coulee/Rare Prairie

After a brief training, volunteers will help collect much-needed native prairie seed while enjoying this rare example of a sand-gravel prairie in full fall bloom. Volunteers will work with FMR Ecologist Joe Walton and Assistant Stewardship Coordinator Kate Clayton in the natural area most recently added to the Sand Coulee Scientific and Natural Area. Volunteers are needed to join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) at the Sand Coulee SNA on Thursday, June 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to identify and help halt the spread of cow vetch and spotted knapweed, encroaching plants deemed by the Department of Natural Resources as a threat to the health of this important area.
