Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy

LOCATION:  Minneapolis, Climate Generation Office
REPORTS TO:  Youth and Policy Manager
TYPE:  42-week contract (school year Sept 2 – June 19), 30 hours/wk, $17/hour
This is a contract position and as such, the contractor is not entitled to the benefits afforded a Climate Generation employee.

Position Description

The Youth Leadership Mentor will help advance youth leading action and climate justice organizing in Minnesota. This position will support Climate Generation Youth Programs including Youth Environmental Activists of MN (YEA! MN), Youth Convening Minnesota (YCM), and partnerships. The Mentor will coach youth and work closely with the YEA! MN Program Coordinator to support youth leadership development and campaigns. This position involves regular evening and weekend work (including Monday evenings).

Essential Responsibilities

Programs Support (80%)

  • Coordinate YCM team learning with local mentors in Greater Minnesota through virtual coaching throughout school year
  • Support planning of YCM public events in Greater Minnesota
  • Work with YEA! MN Coordinator to design monthly trainings and field trips for student leaders to support grassroots organizing and leadership development
  • Convene and facilitate the YEA! MN Network through monthly meetings, including program planning, facilitating peer mentorship, and strategic outreach to schools
  • Support student leaders, YEA! MN Coordinator, Youth and Policy Manager and program partners to orchestrate the Fall Kickoff, Youth Climate Justice Summit, youth retreats, and other youth events
  • Provide direct mentorship to students to support their leadership in each of their school/home communities, including peer engagement, student-led action projects, and statewide campaigns.
  • Support youth to build their skills as anti-racist leaders, and help foster a community that centers those youth most marginalized by dominant US culture
  • Engage high school students in the broader youth climate movement through education, collaboration, advocacy, and action, working closely with partner organizations
  • Work collaboratively with school administrators, educators/Earth Club advisors, and organizational partners to cultivate mutually beneficial and lasting relationships
  • Maintain open, transparent lines of communication with both the Youth and Policy Manager and YEA! MN Coordinator
  • Work with Youth and Policy Manager, YEA! MN Coordinator and the rest of the Programs team to support deeper engagement of youth outside Minneapolis and the Twin Cities.

Communications (10%)

  • Mentor student leaders on their role as Climate Generation ambassadors 
  • Support student leaders to provide timely and consistent blogs and other media
  • Mentor student leaders to provide remarks at events and press conferences
  • Provide content for Climate Generation communications, including the website, monthly e-newsletter and educator e-newsletter, mailed newsletter, annual report and blogs
  • Develop and share resources and products that promote Climate Generation initiatives including webinars, workshops and presentations
  • Coordinate with Program Managers and Communications Coordinator to ensure programs collateral is brand consistent, current and available for outreach opportunities

Organizational Health (5%)

  • Participate as an active member of the Climate Generation team through participation in bi-monthly team meetings, team planning days, and other essential Climate Generation activities.

Development (5%)

  • Support Youth and Policy Manager and YEA! MN Coordinator with preparing grant and program recap reports 
  • Share program data for donor database 

Experience and Qualifications

  • High school graduate, 2 years experience in youth leadership development or youth organizing
  • Experience working with diverse racial communities and communicating with an anti-racism lens
  • Experience in developing team action plans or campaigns
  • Passionate about climate change advocacy and intersectional movement building
  • Strong communication, relationship building, and teamwork skills
  • Self-starter with ability to prioritize tasks
  • Familiar working with local youth programs for teens or K-12 school system 
  • Ability to learn Google Suite programs and Zoom video-conference platform
  • Available for evening and weekend meetings after school hours
  • Preferred valid driver’s license and dependable car
  • Background check will be completed to work with youth.
