YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Peatland Restoration Assistant will support the Natural Climate Solutions Climate Mitigation strategy of the Minnesota-North Dakota-South Dakota Chapter of The Nature Conservancy by assisting with greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring at restored peatland sites in St. Louis County. They will receive direct training and experience in field methods and equipment for monitoring GHG emissions and fluxes in forested and wetland systems. This is a 12-week position, will require 40 hours per week and has a preferred start date in mid-May 2022. This position will be based at the U.S.D.A. Forest Service Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Grand Rapids, MN.
The Peatland Restoration Assistant will assist with field work 3-4 days/week at peatland sites in the Sax Zim Bog area (near Meadowlands, MN), with 1-2 days per week in the office to analyze gas samples collected at field sites. COVID-19 and other TNC safety protocols will be followed. A valid driver’s license is required. Work schedule will typically be Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–5:00 pm.
The compensation for this position is $15 per hour. Travel expenses and mileage will be covered, and some housing assistance may be available.
The Peatland Restoration Assistant will gain real-life work experience in ecology, science, restoration and monitoring of peatland ecosystems. They will add capacity to the Conservancy’s Climate Mitigation Team and contribute their abilities to building the evidence base for climate and other ecosystem service benefits from restoration of ditched peatlands. The technician will gain significant experience as a field and lab assistant for the lead technician working with world-class researchers at one of the premier long-term ecological research facilities in the US.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Assist with installation of field sampling infrastructure
- Assist with data collection using field equipment to support GHG monitoring across a gradient of peatland sites
- Assist with download and initial processing of field data as well as data management and processing
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult or hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances
We are seeking an undergraduate student or recent graduate who is looking to gain hands-on experience in peatland or wetland restoration or climate mitigation science and field work. Individuals who are detail-oriented and skilled in working with high tech equipment are encouraged to apply. All people applying for this position must have the following minimum qualifications.
- Have or be pursuing a degree in natural resources management, environmental science, environmental engineering, conservation biology, hydrology, botany, soil science or related field and 6 months experience
- Strong accountability and commitment to accuracy in working with scientific data
- Field and/or lab experience
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
