Performs both office work and field/technical work in the area of natural resources to provide program support to ensure natural areas of the MPRB are well-maintained.  Assists with natural resources management activities, equipment maintenance schedules and equipment inventory. Develops natural resources informational materials; generates and maintains data needed for program support.  Implements daily and weekly work activities and provides work direction to seasonal crews, youth workers and volunteers. What You’ll Do

  • Develops work schedules and provides work direction to seasonal work crews, youth workers and volunteers during the field season.
  • Provide mentorship and encouragement to seasonal staff and volunteers doing natural resources management / field work. Trains and performs manual labor along with staff and / or volunteers including, but not limited to: planting, herbicide applications, mechanical removal and disposal of invasive plants.
  • Trains seasonal staff and volunteers on work matters including safe use of equipment and tools and work rules, conduct and standards.
  • Assist Natural Resources Supervisor with cross-departmental (Forestry, Asset Management, Planning) coordination of projects.
  • Coordinates record-keeping and administration of natural resources program and generates needed records and data to support related activities and initiatives.
  • Ability to produce accurate maps and other representations of data for field work activities through data collection in the field. Ability to resolve and correct conflicting information and ensure the accuracy of data.
  • Assist with the development of information regarding natural resource management for distribution to internal and external audiences including MPRB staff, Board of Commissioners, Superintendent and Executive team, park users and cooperative agencies.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

What To Bring

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, environmental sciences or related field.
  • College level coursework in the biological sciences (dendrology, botany, biology, ecology) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Field experience in hands-on natural resources management and coordination of work crews: at least equivalent to one (1) full time years.   
  •  Experience in the proper use and basic maintenance of small power equipment such as chainsaws, brush saws, and weed whips: at least equivalent to one (1) full time years.  
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, mapping functions in ESRI GIS and interpretation of data: at least equivalent to one (1) full time years. 
  • Experience coordinating and overseeing outdoor work for youth workers and/or volunteers: a at least equivalent to one (1) full time years. 
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to five (5) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the essential duties may be considered. 
  • Valid driver’s license
  • MDA Pesticide Applicators License Categories A and J or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Wildland Firefighter Type 2 certification (FFT2) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

  • The physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, drive, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see and perform repetitive motions.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to local travel both to and from work locations.  Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.  The ability to remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time.
  • The incumbent may be required to traverse on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces to ascend and descend ladders to access work areas.  Exposure to all types of weather, insects and poison ivy is possible.
  • Work is performed in a normal office environment (70%) and in the field (30%) coordinating and assisting with work activities of seasonal employees, youth workers and volunteers and monitoring the work of contracted staff.  Will be required to work occasional alternate work schedule including evenings and weekends.

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:

  • Current procedures and best practices in natural resource management regarding native plant communities and invasive species control programs.
  • Data gathering and compilations using GPS and ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online.
  • Mechanical aptitude to operate and utilize small equipment including chainsaws, weed whips, brush saws, hand tools, sprayers, and their safe and effective use.
  • Detail oriented and ability to accurately prepare reports on natural areas management and invasive species control.
  • Work independently and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Read and understand technical information such as:  landscape design plans, contracts and specifications, agreements, maps and policies, herbicide labels, material safety data sheets and equipment manuals.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above).  Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered.
