About the Department

Forever Green Initiative is a multi-sector collaborative, housed within the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, that is pursuing a integrative strategy for clean water, soil health, and rural economic vitality. The strategy is based on augmenting current crop production systems with economically viable perennial and winter-annual crops. Such crops and systems enable agriculture to move toward continuous and productive living plant cover of soil across landscapes and watersheds, enhancing agricultural production while also protecting soil, water, wildlife, and building rural economies. Forever Green’s crop R&D and commercialization activities are based at the University of Minnesota. Forever Green’s cross-sector partnership with non-profit, government, and private entities works to develop supportive policy and economic models. In sum, Forever Green works to develop new perennial and winter annual crops, new agricultural production systems that integrate these crops, new supply and value chains that provide profitable markets for these crops, and a supportive climate of policy and opinion for continuous-living-cover (CLC) agriculture.

Cross-sector collaborations are crucial to the work of Forever Green. To continue to build the scope and impact of such collaborations, Forever Green is hiring a Director of Partnerships and Outreach, a newly created position. The Director will take the lead in management and implementation of strategic partnership development and communications to advance Forever Green’s cross-sector collaborations and reach strategic audiences. Collaborative efforts will span partners housed within the University of Minnesota, and external partners working on agriculture, conservation, and economic development across multiple sectors.
