Why Wakan Tipi Center?

Wakan Tipi Center will be a 10,000 square foot interpretive center at Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary named for the sacred site Wakan Tipi Cave. The center will accurately interpret and educate the community about the rich cultural and natural history of the area. The Center will have a Dakota focus at its foundation and will include stories and cultures of ethnicities represented in East Side and Lowertown, Saint Paul. It will serve as a community gathering place to foster understanding and connection in a vibrant natural setting.

Wakan Tipi Center will support community connectedness, equitable park access, and cultivate local environmental stewards. It will be a unique site on the East Side for people from across Minnesota and around the country. Located within the City of Saint Paul and adjacent to important natural resources such as the Mississippi River, and Dakota sacred  sites, it will be a peaceful and inspiring site easily accessed from the busy urban environment that surrounds it. Already, more than 3,500 grade students visit the site annually for social studies and natural science education. With new partnerships and increased capacity to accommodate visitors, Lower Phalen Creek Project envisions a creating a new model for people to access and gain understanding of the important resources in the area.
