The Department of Commerce is holding 22 meetings on the first ever EIS for a crude oil pipeline. Crude oil pipeline infrastructure is aging, and Enbridge is proposing to replace their third oldest pipeline in Minnesota. The new proposed replacement Line 3 pipeline will actually be a larger pipeline than the old one, carrying mostly heavy tar sands oil and opposed to lighter weight oil, in a new corridor for over half its route. Heavy tar sands oil has never been successfully removed from lakes and streams once it has weathered and sunk. The proposed route will cross some of Minnesota’s cleanest remaining waters, through three watersheds, be buried in permeable soil and cross precious wild rice lakes and wetlands.
