Minnesota should phase out man-made releases of mercury pollution into our air and water to protect our health and environment.
Our Goals
Mercury-Free Minnesota is dedicated to achieving a phase-out of mercury emissions in Minnesota.
A phase-out is achievable through local ordinances, industry- or product-specific initiatives, and statewide or federal legislation aimed at meeting the following goals:
Establish enforceable mercury reduction targets based on a 60 percent reduction by 2010, a 90 percent reduction by 2015, and virtual elimination by 2020;
Reduce mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants;
Fund research to reduce mercury emissions from taconite production;
Prohibit sales of motor vehicles with mercury components;
Phase out mercury in products, including vaccines;
Broaden mercury labeling and disposal laws to ensure removal from the solid waste stream of products that contain mercury, including dental amalgams;
Tighten statewide water quality standard for mercury.
